How to Handle Dental Emergencies Until Your Appointment

Bitten Lip or Tongue
Accidentally biting your lip or tongue can be a common problem. If this happens, clean the area gently with a cloth. Then to reduce swelling, apply a cold compress. If the bite is deep and the bleeding doesn’t stop, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.

Broken Tooth
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. To help reduce the swelling, use a cold compress. Contact Gentle Dental Care to schedule an emergency appointment.

Jaw Injury (Possibly Broken)
Immediately apply a cold compress to control the swelling. Call Gentle Dental Care or go immediately to the hospital emergency department.

Knocked Out Tooth
If a tooth is knocked out and you still have it, there may be a chance for reimplantation. With water, gently rinse off the root. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert the tooth into the socket and hold it there. If you cannot put it back in without pain, place the tooth in a cup of milk. Call Gentle Dental Care right away. Bring your tooth in with you and we will attempt reattachment or discuss options.

Object Stuck Between Teeth
First try to remove the object yourself by swishing with water or with dental floss. Never try to remove a stuck object with a sharp object like a knife. If unsuccessful at removing the object, call Gentle Dental Care for an appointment.

Toothache
To start, rinse your mouth with warm water and use dental floss on either side of the tooth. This clears out any potential food or debris caught between the teeth. Never place any type of painkiller against the gums as it may burn the gum, causing more damage. If the pain does not subside shortly, schedule an appointment.
